November 11-15

Thank you to all of the parents who helped make the book fair a success!  I cannot describe to you the excitement I saw exhibited by our students!  I even turned around at carpool to see a group of students standing in a circle, each reading one of their new books!  Thank you for helping our community celebrate the love of reading!

*St. Paul's Annual Food Drive*
Part  of an Episcopalian education, is learning about the importance of serving others and helping students answer this calling that has been given to us.  One of the ways we do this at St. Paul's is by having an annual Fall food drive to collect much needed items for the St. Paul's food pantry.  This undertaking is organized and ran by the Student Council and is a much loved tradition and competition that truly benefits members of our local community.  To learn more about specific items that are being requested and which items will receive bonus points on which days please see this link.  You can also keep track of our how many items we've collected as a school by taking a peak at our progress meter near the front desk of the south building or by simply glimpsing down the administrative hallway where items are stored until they can be transported to the pantry.  We truly appreciate your help and support with this initiative.  The lessons our students learn and the impact this event has on individuals and their families are immeasurable.

Bully Prevention Education
This week I had the pleasure of teaching chapel to our first and second grade students.  Our Bible lesson focused on Zacchaeus so on Monday we watched a video about him, the choices he made, how Jesus interacted with him, and the change of heart that Zacchaeus experienced.  We talked about the importance of remembering that people change and we also talked about how Jesus treated Zacchaeus, who exhibited certain characteristics that could be classified as bullying, and how we could use his behavior as an example of how to interact with people who may be less than pleasant at times.  Later in the week we had a lesson on the seven things we can do as St. Paul's students to prevent/address bullying.  Students learned an action to go with each step.  We also began using the Second Step program to teach empathy and it's role in preventing bullying.  The Second Step program is a resource we use that focuses on three main areas (empathy training, impulse control and problem solving, and anger management) to help students develop social emotional skills.  I look forward to teaching more of these chapels throughout the year on both floors as we dive deeper into each of the seven things we can do as individuals, both here and at other venues, to prevent/address bullying behavior.

Rick Ackerly & The Genius in Every Child
Please join us at 6:45 on Tuesday, November 12 in the North MPR to hear author Rick Ackerly present on his latest book, The Genius in Every Child. We are partnering with Sion and Oak Hill Day School to bring Rick to Kansas City. Mr. Ackerly has served as the Head of School for four independent schools.  He began his career in education serving as the Principal of Sion's Grade School campus in the 70's. We are ecstatic to have this opportunity and we hope you'll be able to join us for a spectacular presentation. If you would like to preview the introduction, epilogue, and a few chapter of the book you can access them here

In Harmony Performances
We have a wonderful group of about fifty-five students who have been enthusiastically participating in our In Harmony choir rehearsals every Monday morning at 7:15!  Under the direction of Tamara Everly and Maria Meli, these students are working hard to learn and perform numerous Christmas songs.  They will share their talent and hard work with our school community at all school chapel on Friday, December 13.  On Monday, December 16, the students will sing at two divisional chapels and then perform at three local assisted living facilities.  They will leave campus at 9:15 and return at 11:30 after singing at Bishop Spencer Place, Brighton Gardens, and Clarridge Court.  Much thanks to Tamara Everly and Maria Meli for providing these wonderful opportunity for our students.  If your child elected not to participate this fall, he or she is welcome to join In Harmony in January when our new Spring choir will begin.
